Happy Fourth of July! Let’s Talk About Your Right to Repair

A common misconception in the collision repair industry is that drivers are required to bring their vehicle to one of their insurance company’s “preferred repair shops”. Simply this is just not true. In the state of Pennsylvania there is what’s called the Right to Repair which means that you have the right to choose the repair facility that fixes your car. Insurance companies have what’s known as “direct-repair facilities” (DRP) which are auto body repair shops that have a contractual agreement with insurance companies to perform repairs with a specific deadline and budget. While this might sound great, the reality is that these deadlines are impractical and almost impossible to meet especially in today’s climate. So, what happens when shops are given such short timelines? They cut corners in the repair process to meet deadlines. In many cases these DRP shops care more about keeping the insurance companies happy rather than their customers!
