As it relates to aluminum frame and body repair, arguably the brand that gets the most press on the subject is Tesla. Elon Musk’s deep dive into forwarding the electric car market has not been a flash in the pan venture as some had predicted. Here on the Main Line, we had begun seeing more and more of these vehicles well before the dealership joined our business community a couple years ago. More recent “big industry news” came from Ford in 2015 when they announced they would begin releasing the famous F150 with a “high-strength military-grade aluminum alloy body” – an announcement which turned a lot of skeptics into believers in recent years. However, Tesla and Ford are not nearly the first automakers to use aluminum in vehicles. In fact, Audi, for example has used this light and versatile metal in the A8 for over 20 years. So, what’s the big deal?

In the last several years there has been a much stronger push by all of the major auto manufacturers for shops like ours to get certified to repair their full line of models. So, just as we are certified by Honda Motor Co. to repair Hondas and Acuras, we also had to purchase the proper equipment and get the proper training for certification by Tesla. It is that training and equipment that has enabled us to step up our game as it relates to aluminum body and frame work.

What does that look like? New equipment like mig welders for aluminum, Self piercing rivet guns. New work spaces like a clean room so that certain aluminum repairs are made separate and away from steel repairs so there is no risk of corrosion long term. And of course, a good deal of training.
